As published in todays Sun newspaper… a report in comparisons between public sector organisations (such as DWP’s Jobcentre Plus) and private businesses…

Sector
Private
Public
Total Employed
22,000,000
7,000,000
Pay (Average)
£19,932
£22,417 (30% better off an hour)
Pensions
15% of public sector workers gain in better pensions
Hours worked
23% more hours worked
9 years less work in lifetime
Productivity
28% rise in work undertaken
34% less productive than Private sector
Comments Common capitalism trends clearly shown here: longer hours, higher productivity and lower pay Perhaps if they were paid the same as private sector and work as effectively, we could employ more of them (or save the treasury money)

So, the next time you hear a Jobcentre Plus staff member complain about the so-called vast workload they have with the high unemployment rates… consider the above table, take into account they are lucky to have a job, that they are better paid than if the workload was for a private business, have a good pension scheme, and although they will do around 9 year less over their lifetime so cannot really claim to be overworked, they still remain 34% less productive than an employee for a private sector employer.

This means:-

  • For every hour they do, they have a 20 minute break or timewasting period (this is only an average it appears worse than that at my local Jobcentre Plus office)
  • You might have lost your job to the recession and have been out of work for 6 months, a year or maybe two years …  but when your luck comes in and you secure a job, you will still undertake several more years of work over your lifetime than the inpolite bully at the Jobcentre.
  • For less pay private sector workers are putting in more effort, to do more work, for more longer in duration. (This means public sector workers are getting more pay, for less effort, doing less work for less hours)

Productivity

This is a worry. Ignoring pay and pension schemes; the person having a lower workload should be more productive than a person with more work to do i.e. more likely to rush it; when productivity is measured by efficiency of course, as we cannot assume the workload will be completed in that one shift or day.

Person X (benchmark) can achieve 80 tasks on an average day (8 hours for example).

Person A (public sector) has 100 tasks to do in a day. Person X  specifies that its not possible to do more than 80 tasks in that average day. A third less effort (approx) makes 54. 54 tasks can be achieved in that day.

Person B (private sector) also has a 100 tasks to do that day (initially). Person B can undertake approx 30% more work (30% of 80 is 24) than Person A as Person B works harder.  Person B would have approx 15 minutes at the end where all tasks have been completed (cant do 104 tasks as only 100 tasks set). (If Person B worked longer (approx 25% more) Person B could achieve 25 more tasks – not applicable as Person A works less hours.)

Person A only completes almost half that of Person B – and would be paid more. Stupid example – doesnt include breaks etc. and tasks wouldnt be that of the same time between them all – but the message is clear.

I HOPE THIS SENDS A CLEAR MESSAGE OUT TO THOSE WHO ARE UNEMPLOYED; THAT JUST BECAUSE YOU ARE IN A PERIOD OF UNEMPLOYMENT AND HAVE TO DEAL WITH THESE PEOPLE – DONT EVER FEEL SECOND RATE AS YOU WORK HARDER THAN THEM AND OVERALL WILL WORK MORE YEARS LONGTERM.

at the bbc site there are david cameron phrases

just hitting either the rich or the welfare scrounger”

“There is no way of dealing with an 11% budget deficit just by hitting either the rich or the welfare scrounger.”

they are still harking on about welfare scroungers’,personally i have always held the belief the worst dossers’ are in jobs’ with a get paid the most for doing the least and burdening others’ through false position and bullying.

many of those who are long term jobless are also having long term problems’ are those with disabilities like learning difficulties and mental health problems as well as the job centre behaviour to contend with and having to attend this pit they are treated less then favorably on applications for employment, these are abandoned in a system that promises to assist but in reality offers little of substance while having problems trivalised by outside bodies such as atos.perhaps they would be wiser to scrap this unfair waste of money first.

these statements that are published are little more then misrepresentation are totally unworkable and are creating waste of taxpayers money both in creating unjustified opportunities for those that are happy to listen for the digby jones brigade and no one else.

the only reason the unemployed are called “customers” is simply because they want to title themselves as customer service in their own silly world, the whole situation is a complete failure a farce badly run and a laughing stock except for those “customers” having to attend and endure this.

I rather like his hard hitting ideas. SNIGGERS. Look at the facts 46 million is paid in benefits to overseas disabled/sick in other countries 9,600 to be exact. whereas 14 workers of the DWP Get 9 MIllion for consulting. Someone is taking the piss me think. He wants to help people and the economy get rid of these clearly overpaid consultants.

These consultants and idiots who write these reports who learly have no clue as to what the real world is.

Noticed My DWP payment hadn’t been put in the bank. I thought It might be running late so I waited until friday before I checked my account. Still no money so I resolved to phone them on saturday but unfortunately they were closed.I waited until 9.02 am 21/06/10 and telephoned the payment service using an 0845 number. A man called shakira spoke to me and stated that my details weren’t passed on from the jobcente. He said that he would have to chase it up for me and Iwould get a call back on my home phonewithin 3 hours. So I resolved to give them until 12:10 and the phoned back at roughly 11:20 they stated that my benefit evidence had not been put onto the system and therefore payment was not authorised. It would now be put in my back before 5 pm.

CAN I COMPLAIN ? Should I complain ?Could I get compensation for this ?

It is far worse than you describe.
Jobcentre staff don’t even do anything useful.
There is no help for unemployed people, just pointless form shuffling.

Hi Everyone thought I would fill you in on the final straw.

My benefits were screwed up, i phoned a week later and they had not authorised em. they apologised and putthe money in the same day,

I then proceeded to ask for 28p back for the phone call.
three first class letters on yellow paper
one second class on white paper and small print, just to pay me 28 pence is it me or is that excessive and borderline taking the peee

58% of dwp employees earn less than 21k a year, these people – many on 15k or just about minimum wage for the hours they work are the ones you mainly deal with in the job centres.

      Raymondo says:

Yes, but £15K to £21K for not doing anything useful is £15K to £20K wasted.
If they had the guts to admit what they do is pointless, and keep complaining to those further up the tree to improve things, I’d repect them.

        Flexible New Deal says:

not all staff are a bad bunch (disclaimer line I guess).

But from my own experience of the people I had directly dealt with at my local jobcentre *and* what I have observed (yes, its possible that they only be less productive 30 minutes before I enter until 30 minutes after I leave) I notice the following:

        * A mandatory 5-20 minutes break between “customers” (lower range for Customer Service on front desk who wander off… before returning; upper for advisers – sometimes they have work to catch up on in this time but mostly twiddle their thumbs or walk off and get a coffee)

(I myself have always worked in a customer-facing role typically as first point of contact, customers can be really annoying and it gets worse when they are angry due to something someone else has done. If they cannot cope with customer interaction or use text book techniques to calm the situation down and give great Customer Service then they shouldnt be in such a job role. Likewise, for advisers if the work is too difficult for them they shouldnt be in the job. For “customers” who are unemployed (all of them) especially those who are looking for such work or similar work, it becomes very frustrating that those who cannot do the job properly have a job and those who need a job whereas they think they can do a better job, i.e. themselves, dont have the opportunity. This is how people get so upset with the poor service delivered and whereas it becomes very political.)

        * Gaze at computer screen or documents with a blank look on their faces (not their fault initially because they are under-trained and dont understand; but those been there a few years should have surely sharpened up their confidence, knowledge and skills – although people keep their jobs on targets of people signing off/sanctions and not on how productive they are)

        * The “If you dont like it sign off” approach. This helps their targets. Although cheekly and poor customer service, its understandable where you are directly criticising the person where its actually the system and not them….. but they say that when you aren’t even saying that. This is a disgusting attitude – I wish every DWP employee who has ever said that, some dreadful financial problems of their own and 6 month sanctions on their dole money.

        * Two faced approach. Don’t take them for face value… If they ask you if you want to apply for a certain job where you decline where they agree with your points, however, you see them click a drop down box, and press the apply/print button… then they come back witht he other two jobs, while sticking one sheet in the bin, you know they have applied you for a job they haven’t notified you for. (Of course you have “good cause” if they haven’t made you aware i.e. given you the written notice, however, the systems record shows it was printed… so you coudnt rely on this)

I get £64 JSA a week, no other benefits whatsoever,no tax credits for kids, no housing(my own house)no council tax help, nowt.My wife works fulltime, but only on minimum wage. I have been on the dole 3 months. Try to explain to the job centre staff you have not got the money for travelling every day, they do not want to know.
You are expected to catch buses for interviews to go here and there. You even are expected to go to a place just to pick up an application form now, they do not post them out half the time, am I supposed to fork out money all the time just to collect an application?? Fair enough if it was for an actual interview. The JC do not pay bus fairs just for collecting applications, only for interviews.

£64 – £10 for tobacco(my only treat) the rest more often than not goes towards household bills. Where am I supposed to find travel money for the week from that.

      Kyron says:

I am saddened to say yes you are expected to do everything right down to but not nescessarily including the wiping of the Jcp staff backsides for them.

They treat you liek crap, they keep you in the dark, they can sanction you on a whim, if you love this youll love flexible new deal, soon to be slave labour workfare your benefit, 30 hours workplacement you get travel maybe on a monthly or weekly basis reimbursement, 10 Hours to do your jobsearch, you are also expected to sign on, visit a 3rd party provider what will see you in all probability see you as a giant £ sign. During your time at these 3rd party places they will treat you like shit, generally threaten, intimidate and try to shaft you.

Hardman complain kick up a fuss visit your local mp, write letters. Secret to a better sign on experience remember they are just people designed to push paper work, if your rude with them they more likely to be rude to you.
