Jobcentre Plus: Nude Webcam Performers

Posted on May 7th, 2010.

Post Categories: Labour Market Systemjobcentre Plus

Jobcentre Plus are advertising for nude webcam performers @ £100 per day. Male and Female candidates must have a computer and broadband connection and be available working at home. These “nationwide” adverts are targeted. I had searched all jobs in Ipswich and Colchester – when I tried Felixstowe this job was available – but wasn’t in the others although this was a nationwide job advert. Very tempting (easy money) at a moral price.

If it wasn’t for the fact that I look like Albert Steptoe I’d do it myself!
Seriously though, I don’t see anything wrong with it. They’re going to be working from home, not walking the streets or working in some in sleazy massage parlour.

I’m no prude, but this can’t really be the way to live your life. It’s a bit sad that the JC can’t fill their crap vacancy listings with anything better, or help people find something decent. Shake your moneymaker on the internets; great.

    Flexible New Deal says:

Well in my eyes prostitution is about selling yourself (your soul, dignity etc. and giving up self-respect etc.) for money.

Wikipedia has a definition of prostitution that reads:

Prostitution is the act or practice of being available for sex acts with another person in return for payment.

Does online explicit sexual acts constitute a “sex act”?

That is the question! Phrases like “phone sex” and “cyber sex” has been around for a long while now, and whereas it obviously isn’t sex in the manner of sexual intercourse… Does a webcam performer doing a sex act on webcam to a client who is also doing a sex act stick them in a comparable scenario of (for example) a prostitute giving a client a hand job?

In my eyes, if two people who are remotely connected via means of technology whereas both persons strongly imagine (or more in this case, the client who is indirectly paying for the webcam performer) that the other is performing a sex act on them or having sex, with the power of the human brain, although its not exactly comparable I would suggest it is very similar, by concept.

Under the law, this is perfectly legal but then again prostitution is legal (soliciting and kerb crawling isn’t). Under capitalism, people are bought to perform a job to get the owner/employer money. Under Human Rights people deserve a real job to conditions which are fair and where they aren’t exploited.

I, under no circumstances believe that it is right for a person to buy someone for a set period to perform sex acts and undermining explicit dialogue to others. As far as I am aware prostitutes get payment most of the time directly from the end clients. These webcam performers will be paid by an adult website for a set period of time while the clients/users pay the adult website.

Now under choice… Does the person have a choice not to apply? Yes, of course… but we can apply the same scenario to prostitutes: Do they have a choice of whether or not to stand at street corners etc.? Yes…. Does a person have a choice of committing suicide? Yes…

These questions are all looked at in the most basic light. I feel it is very irresponsible (the nature of the extent is shown by length of this post) for the Government (Jobcentre Plus) to advertise these jobs. Prostitutes don’t have the same element of choice if they are hooked on hard drugs or in huge debt (just two of the many problems that cause it; people don’t just choose it as a career choice) – either they need their fix or are forced into working my pimps with their lives are in danger if they refuse.

Using the same concept… the increased sanction regime and low benefit rates… people can find it hard to make ends meet coupled with the difficulties of finding a job in this small job market and the malicious sanctions awarded these days can dry up income full stop.

I am a person of high moral integrity but I had to admit I am even tempted by this job (if it wasn’t for having to see an adviser anyway…) even more so that workfare is coming soon (yes, I would rather be free and making better money then forced to work just for benefits).

I have never gone on an adult sex chatroom website – the concept of paying for explicit dialogue or for seeing nudity/sex acts for money has never tempted me. Why pay for that when sex is free or for around the same amount including drinks at a bar, pub or club? I have however been on general cam chat websites like person.com etc. and they all have their fair share of people pushing the envelope; the dialogue will never be nice. There will be people who will try the “nice guy” approach, people who try their “seductive” powers (although everyone would get the same result for the price) and the “abusive person” people who feel the mandatory “bitch”, “whore” etc. in every sentence along with demands is appropriate.

I do agree with the points “Funny A4e photos” make; and its true. But we can do the similar comparison between workfare and the transatlantic slave trade. Just because workfare isn’t to the full extent of the slave trade: it doesn’t mean its acceptable in our society.

I am always looking for new ways out of unemployment… finding a job seems easy but securing an interview seems very difficult and getting past an interview stage seems impossible. Theft is not an option and never will be; neither will fraud. Its not just the low income and the sanction regime etc. I have gone from a human being to a piece of dog shit. I have no right to liberty, privacy, or for my personal life. Freedom of Thought, Freedom of Expression, and Freedom of Association has long gone out of the window. If I make a “remark” within my own rights; it becomes pending sanction.

I however, as so many other jobseekers, do not continue to complain about these rights being infringed as we don’t have a leg to stand on (got 2! lol) – it is long portrayed in the media about civil liberties being eroded which is fully true but still no highlight of those unemployed. Enter workfare though (Work for Your Benefit) and questions are now being raised, only a few, but progress. I, like others don’t want to be unemployed and are pretty much a waste product of our society. So little jobs for the number of unemployed (and those employed who want to change jobs or those shortly leaving education or in education but need a part time job) – its not my fault – I don’t solely comply with minimum steps, I far exceed them. I don’t sleep in all day, I stick to the routine as if I had a job to increase reliability and stay in the routine of getting up for work – work I don’t have; I also do a few websites in my spare time (like this one) which keeps me using my administration skills – to be precise, typing and of course keeping my spelling and grammar to a half decent standard.

Jobcentre Plus far overlooks my efforts and the problems with their Labour Market System. They advertise New Deal jobs (which aren’t jobs but placements), they recently advertised jobs for sorting election ballot papers (although has always been done by volunteers – took days for it to be removed, resulting in probably ID theft), they advertise these immoral jobs, most jobs advertise in my area recently has been below 14 hours a week and although directgov has a separate agency search, the search results from “Jobcentre Plus” are full of non-existent agency jobs.

Hope this isn’t too much of a rant; but you need to be proactive to get a job and not reactive. You need to be constantly looking with an open mind in how to get yourself out of unemployment although everything is against you. If you are struggling with bills etc. and are either threatened with or in receipt of unlawful benefit sanctions; you need to find a better way. These immoral jobs are an ideal opportunity…. but at what cost? What if someone recognises you? Say good bye to getting another job or risk the opportunity for being dismissed if found out. It is impossible to prevent someone either recording or taking a snapshot of a webcam. £100 a day seems a nice sum but is it shooting yourself in the foot? I think it is.

Jobcentre Plus are so narrow minded in not realising this short term well-paid job could ensure a person never ever has a career (or one which has came to an end). Do you keep in on your CV? Or do you leave it out? What also isn’t realised is that this job seems illegal because it doesn’t look like its waged… looks rather cash in hand. You know, you become self-employed, so webcam performing, get paid £100 per day and pay taxes on it yourself. The real case scenario is the person isn’t going to register as self-employed at all and the tax-man will not receive any money from it.

The only person who wouldn’t consider the job in the first instance (without debating the moral points of view of it) are those who don’t mind staying on benefits… the people who are unlikely to do more than the bare minimum to comply. These people are legal to claim, however, shouldn’t be claiming.

    * http://www.flexible-new-deal.co.uk/2009/11/27/351-jobcentre-plus-advertised-jobs-were-in-the-adult-entertainment-industry/ – Our research into approx 7 adult entertainment jobs per week highlighted Jobcentre Plus acceptance of these sort of jobs.

Jobcentre Plus says its the law and they can’t refuse a job if its not illegal. Actually, Jobcentre Plus is providing a service where no law really comes into it. As a service provider they have every right to refuse to display immoral and non-existent jobs. They choose not to.

    * http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23418396-job-centre-seeks-women-to-strip-as-8-an-hour-webcam-performers.do – Just one of the many articles from 2007 regarding female webcam performers. Jobcentre Plus choose to keep the advert then and still are displaying newer ones.

the job centre should not be carrying these “vacancies” it is inappropriate for a government agency to actively openly promote such activity in these forms’ and cause offense to some,of course job centre standards while trying to promote charters’/fairness/compliance to disability awareness the reality it falls far short on these with attitudes towards benefit claiming “customers’”.

if i went to a public computer at the council offices it would block such access to this material as you would expect.

if people want to access this material then they should be free to do so,the job centre will sink to any depths to remove people from the dole.

Cheers Kyron – you are a great asset to this site!

I had researched the situation and a 2003 ruling forced Jobcentre Plus to reconsider after Ann Summers took them to court for the adult entertainment ban. This is how shit the Government is… Ann Summers had a point… why ban the jobs it does when it doesn’t require a sex shop license? DWP/Jobcentre Plus should have adjusted its policies allowing Ann Summers to advertise but ban other jobs in the industry. Nope, the whole ban has been lifted and jobs such as adult tv presenter, nude webcam performers, and escort is now allowed. I haven’t had chance to post as I am still researching the General Election and future of Welfare… (I don’t like having two major posts on the same day!)

    Flexi,
Apparently they are going to be discussing this very subject on the Radio 4 Woman’s Hour program on Wednesday 2nd June (tomorrow).

I have to admit I don’t think I’m brave enough to endure an entire program of ‘Woman’s Hour ” to hear their wisdom on the subject as even a small exposure tends to make me drift in and out of conscience and lose the will to live. (With a recomendation like that maybe they should seriously think about becoming New Deal providers)?

I was job hunting on one of the major job sites the other week, online, totaljobs or reed, one of them anyway. The job that I saw advertised was for an adult performer in movies. In other words to be in dirty movies, is this the sort of jobs that should be advertised on mainstream job sites, I think not. If they think I am applying for a job like that, they have another thing coming.
