Workfare: Why MP’s are ok with it

Why are MP’s okay with the proposed idea of workfare via the planned Work for Your Benefit pilots?  You would have thought that more MP’s would have expressed concerns about the direction the country is moving to. Flexible New Deal scandal has today summarised the reasons why MP’s have generally been in favour of this slavery.

Arguments for workfare (MP’s views/understanding) Actual outstanding concerns of workfare
  1. Tried and tested method in a few large nations around the globe
  2. Government scheme so National Minimum Wage isn’t applicable
  3. Work for Your Benefit is a “work placement” and not a “job”
  4. Work placements are only in addition to and not set to replace real jobs
  5. Unaware that providers can sell workfare participants to employers
  6. No real concerns about a Training Allowance instead of Jobseekers Allowance
  7. Workfare can give participants a meaningful experience of work
  1. Tried and tested method which clearly shows it doesn’t work (for example USA had to dilute their workfare schemes)
  2. National Minimum Wage is supposed to be the bottom most earnings possible for doing work (which workfare is)
  3. Call it what you like – under Common Law you are a worker and therefore entitled to NMW – those in training are usually entitled to a reduced NMW for “accredited training”
  4. We all know this is bullshit. Every unpaid job ever created (even voluntary) has hindered paid jobs. If not free, you would pay. If people wouldnt volunteer for charities then they would employ people – just like they employ the management
  5. This is in effect a big element of slavery where participants will be treated like assets to be traded with businesses
  6. Training Allowance will stick people officially in “training” and making them no longer “unemployed
  7. Workfare (like quoted by minsters) is designed as a punishment for victims of the weak Labour Market. it will not improve employability.

FND Two schools of thought here.

1 they are so far out of touch it is unbeleivable. It is never acceptable to claim for money they shouldn’t rightly refuse. They turn round and say it was within the current rules doesn’t cut the mustard.

2 Thecurrent government wants to loose power so fed up that it is trying to annoy everyone.

I would personally go with the fact they are out oftouch with rality.

As regards bumber 4. What you say may be true of some of the large charities. But it is certainly not true of the many small charities run on a shoestring be dedicated people.

I work for a small charity, so I speak from expereince.

    This whole idea disgusts me.

If i had to endure this crap my benefit would barely even cover the cost to get to work. Where I live First, another private organisation born out of the Thatcher ethos, charge £35 for a bus pass for the week. That’s half my benefit straight off – remember I don’t get paid so I have to feed myself and meet ALL my expenses (including those incurred by my new ‘employer’) out of £30 a week, even though the government says the minimum is £65 (according to the benefits notes you receive).

This is outright slavery and utterly utterly wrong. In fact this is not just disgustingly unethical but compeltely unworkable. There is no way people in my position thus could be forced to do this.
