Lib Dem MP John Leech opposes the Work for your Benefit scheme stating:
I am opposed to the ‘Work for your Benefit’ element as it is wrong to make people work for less than minimum wage.
Moreover, it is unfair to punish people who have been unable to get a job by treating them as if they were criminals doing community service.
It effectively bypasses the minimum wage and does not help people develop the skills they need to get a good job. I am also sceptical that the type of employers that are going to be involved are the sorts that we really want to get on board to get people the skills they need.
He commented on the whitepaper of Work for your Benefit which states: it would act as an effect deterrent to people playing the system:
it is intended to be an unpleasant experience.
The Liberal Democrats also believe that the model employed by the DWP for pricing Flexible New Deal contracts is seriously flawed by the DWP setting a contract fee and asking providers to estimate how many people they could get into employment. They state:
This model means that providers get no more for the last person they place in work then they do for the first, so there is no incentive for providers to help those furthest from the job market. As the recession bites, long term unemployment will increase as the economy shrinks and providers will have to help more people than originally estimated.
They continued:
We believe that the DWP should use an ‘accelerator’ funding model. Under this model, contractors would receive more per person for each subsequent person they place into work, which would provide an incentive for them to help those furthest from the job market.
Accelerator Funding Model
There are numerous ways of how this could be implemented. It could either be done as a percentage of the amount the provider claimed could get into employment or per amount of persons each month.
Percentage
The amount claimed over the contract term divided by number of years – cost per each outcome based upon the percentage of the amount claimed ( i.e. First 25% would be much less than the final 20%)
Monthly Increments
Similar to percentage but done by numbers over each month as opposed to year. Outcome chart would exceed the average outcome to award excellent performance.

We feel that Workfare is just Unfair in principle and execution. The experience in America is shocking and must be prevented from being implemented in the UK. We have a petition on 10 Downing St asking for the abolition of Workfare in the UK – it runs out on 19th March 2010 and needs another 140 to reach 500 for a reply. With LibDem & Green Party support it may be possible to stop Workfare from gaining a permanent hold in the UK.
Thanks,
Joanne

Well done, John, for speaking out. I’m deafened by the silence from Labour MPs on this topic
.-= *** *** =-.
The left-Labour Socialist campaign Group opposes Workfare vigorously, notably the MP John McDonnell.
See: http://unfairworkfare.wordpress.com/2010/03/11/john-mcdonnell-on-the-attack-on-welfare/
About bloody time some mp’s developed a back bone and said no we dont think it is right or proper to do this. I only wish they could see the same with those flexible new deal cow boys.
The Unfairworkfare Petition has finished.
The total number of signatories finished at 374.
Unfortunately we didn’t reach the magic 500 number we were aiming for but it’s gratifying to know that 374 people felt strongly enough about the issue of UnfairWorkfare to sign the petition on No 10 Downing St.
If we had got to 500 then we would probably have had a reply from the DWP but the content of this will now forever remain beyond our grasp. What pearls of wisdom we have thus forsaken only a higher power shall know (or something like that).
The main aim of the campaign is to highlight what UnfairWorkfare is and this will continue. We would like to make the phrase “UnfairWorkfare” become known far and wide as the only type of Workfare there is.
We want to label Workfare as “UnfairWorkfare” once and for all.
Many thanks to everyone who signed.
Joanne
