DWP beaurocratic incompetence results to more heartache

Posted on March 5th, 2010.

Post Categories: DWPPensions Service

It is rather common to hear how the Department for Work and Pensions have messed up yet another benefit claim, however, today I report about a blog article I found where a woman battled with cancer and rather recently sadly passed away.

The Pension Service part of the Pension, Disability and Carers Service (an executive agency of the DWP) had taken the wrong person out of the system. Instead of updating the system to reflect the death of this lady they actually reported it as her husband.

It wasn’t long before Tower Hamlets Council wrote to this mans late wife (after picking up details from the Pension Service of the DWP) twice notifying her that as the Housing and Council Tax benefit was in her husbands name it would cease and she would have to make a new claim.

Putting it into perspective… after being devoted to supporting his wife through a long 16 month battle with cancer becoming paralysed for the last 3 weeks with four days at the very end where her condition severely deteriorated, arranging the funeral, alerting the many Government agencies of the death, and attending her funeral… the following day after the funeral two letters arrived in the name of the widower’s wife  of that she couldn’t no longer claim the benefits in her husbands name. This meant the widower’s benefits were stopped – the least you want on your mind after such a big loss.

This shows a major flaw in the system: severe incompetence… how could they have mistaken the person?

For Example:

If the persons Mr Right and Mrs Right had a similar problem…. the limiting factor isn’t whether the person is male or female or the Mr and Mrs prefix because they are married

Lets take two common identification methods… full name and National Insurance number.

Mr Richard James Right   DI 12 34 56 A
Mrs Susan Mary Sarah Right  IQ

This really concerns me! For more information see the original post: How’s this for beaurocratic incompetence?

I have had a letter from DARRA SINGH OBE. Despite all offices below him and him supposedly investigating my complaint he still saw fit to send my reply in small print. This is despite stating that I am visually impaired.

I will be complaining to ICE

An interesting blog by a person that has a few problems and by the looks of it ptsd.

I have just received the news that I was expecting. The ‘we don’t think you are ill note from the Department of Work and Pensions about my claim for Disability Living Allowance (DLA). Stating that they made their decision based on my honesty, every piece of documentation and scans from 2 hospitals, 4 consultants, 2 nursing agencies and the reliable statement of a GP who won’t even write me a letter to travel or prescription as they are too scared! I am fuming but not so much for myself as I expected this much from the pen pushing police but how long do really ill people have to suffer because of the rules that are supposed to help them and not those who are scamming. I nearly died last year and when my mother phoned to inform them that I was in hospital they just said that they could revoke any decision. It is now obvious that people are dying without the help that they deserve.”

DWP Systemsdeclared unfit for purpose ? The BBC reports that the so called fit notes and ESA are being abused and that disabled and unwell people are being denied benefits

A new benefits system promising to end the UK’s sicknote culture has been condemned as unfit for purpose.

I have been searching around for an appropriate site to name and shame peoplewo take unemployed on unfair workplacements. I did come across a name and shame society but it already seems they had enough to say about DWP incompetence. But I Still want to name and shame some companies that want to have me on a placement

Accord housing of westbromwich West Midlands wants me for a longer placement and I said no I am only prepared to do the stipulated amount of forced labour. This leed upto a long and protractec argument with my so called advisor. Kyron they are doing you a favour she said. I said am they hell. they are just after free labour to which she said they have thousands apply for these places.

Interesting post on there. Nothing as a surprise though. I don’t even think its imcompetence in the care-free way, but deliberate as an act of discouragement. Some DWP staff are little hitlers… many, however, are just under-trained etc. and this isn’t just a regional issue as the DWP Survey found out – this is a national problem and it seems middle management and higher are allowing this for purpose of defrauding and discouraging genuine to-be/current claimants from claiming.

If you dont give the workman his tools he is going to do a crap job. (Same with a female with the same task.) If you dont teach the staff properly of how to do their job they are going to make mistakes – these mistakes 80% of the time (its an estimate – not 100% successful as DWP staff do over pay people) saves money or improves cash flow. Of course, there are internal policies they have to tweak the law.
