Figures have been released after a Freedom of Information Act request revealing the extent of the Department for Work and Pensions own employment policies. They, however, refused to reveal how many dismissed members of staff signed on as a consequence.
To summarise:
- 1 in 5 dismissed DWP employees sacked for Gross Misconduct
- 122 members of staff were suspended
- DWP shreds 2.63% of its total workforce by dismissing staff members
- 80% of dismissals may have been due to employees being too kind on Jobseekers
- DWP declines to say how many staff members “turned tables” and claimed jobseekers after dismissal from DWP
80% of dismissals were not Gross Misconduct
This is a very interesting way of looking at things. If approx 1 in 5 (21%) were dismissed for Gross Misconduct then 4 in 5 (80%) wasn’t.
There is a rumour about stating that staff who are too easy (thats polite and respectful) on jobseekers get the sack for not being good at their jobs.
122 members of staff were suspended
From April 2007 – October 2009 (2.5 years) 122 members of staff were suspended.
We can’t assume that all those who were suspended lead to a dismissal and that any dismissal may have been after a suspension as no data shows that but IF for example those 122 employees were suspended prior to a dismissal it shows that under 5% of all dismissals were after a suspension and that 2,505 were dismissed (assumingly) on the spot without an investigation.
DWP shreds 2.63% of its total workforce by dismissing staff members
DWP has approx 100,000 staff, and the 2.5 year period mentioned above where 2,627 members of staff were dismissed gives great insight into the “dont comply, you are out” attitude inside DWP.
3% seems a low percentage; so 2.63% seems insignificant – but its actual rather an high figure to be genuine – not to mention we do not have the statistics of how many members of staff resigned and how many members of staff didn’t get past their probationary period. We would need the figures of these two other factors to determine the going ons in such an organisation.
This is just a stub article while I upload a more in depth article with the figures and link to the FoI Act request.

Instead of saying “We are only obeying orders”, they should learn to simply say “NO!”
