Tags: claim back your travel deductions
Flexible New Deal scandal is seeking persons whom have been on New Deal recently and have had £4 weekly deductions from their travel allowances – or who are on New Deal towards the end of their course and have £4 deducted each week.
Last year we discovered that New Deal weekly travel deductions were unlawful – we now need volunteers to come forward so together we can claim everyones travel deductions back.
In order to help you must either:
- Have finished a New Deal course within last 3 months; Or
- Are on New Deal towards the end of course.
In addition you must:
- Be claiming travel – therefore getting £4 weekly deductions
- Not be in an exempted group where you don’t get deducted £4 per week
- Not be on the “Gateway 2 Work” 2 week course where travel deductions aren’t applicable
There are no restrictions geographically.
If you would like to help and claim back the money unlawfully taken from you, please feel free to leave a comment. We will then contact you with the email address you have entered (or registered with if logged in) so there is no need to publish it in the comment (for your privacy).

I just started new deal at Calder in Oval. I went for my asessment/interview which cost me £6.30 in travel. In a letter sent by them they said I would be reimbursed for the travel costs. When I was there they refused to reimburse me, how can this be right? I will soon have to go twice weekly and live in Southfields which is miles away. I have no choice but to travel via the tube. I don’t know what to do, I sent Calder an email complaining. They never got back to me. I also sent a email to the Jobcentre and my local M.P. £12.60 a week is alot to pay out, that’s a weeks worth of food. Do I spend five hours walking there or do I go without food? I have to pay household bills out of £65 a week so I don’t have much left from that.
HELP! Tracey

Hi Tracey
Send a letter to Calder demanding reimbursement within 48 hours. Make reference to any enclosed papers such as the letter stating reimbursement, New Deal Provider Guidance, copies of relevant emails and photocopy of receipts/tickets for travel. Also send a copy to Jobcentre Plus District Manager.
if you require help with the letter feel free to send me an email to flexiblenewdeal@live.co.uk where i will be happy to help.
Sadly, this will cost a bit to do (i.e. postage), but should get your payment sorted.

I start my 4 week work boost trial tomorrow whilst I am currently on the Flexible New Deal initiative with “A4e”. A4e at Barnsley is who I have been referred to.
Since I have medical problems, and unable to stand for long periods – and its easier to go by car they have stated I can claim upto £11.00 per week towards the cost of petrol for travel as long as I save a receipt and claim it weekly.
My journey is approx 7 miles each way (eg 14miles minimum per day). How much travel expenses would I be entitled to each week, and whats the normal way of claiming these expenses.
I have also been told contradictory information stating the work boost would be for one week and then four weeks.
Many thanks…LJ

Hi Lee
I edited your post to correct your email. Deleted your latest resubmission because it didn’t have the “I have also been told…” sentence. I have accepted this the original submission.
Thanks for posting.

DWP New Deal 13 week Course, Skills Training Ltd, Hounslow
Final Report by Martin Langley to 18/12/09
Abstract
This report documents the author’s experience attending a 13 week “New Deal” training provision for DWP clients at Skills Training Ltd’s offices in Staines Road Hounslow.
Centre management conducts activities under a contract for service provision with the DWP. Clients of varying lengths of unemployment are asked to attend courses to improve
their prospects of securing work.
Centre management do make attempts to provide services in accordance with the SLA, however this seems so badly drafted as to promote clients’ problems rather than abilities, and to perversely incentivise exploitative management practices. Value generated by client effort or ability seems promptly extracted for managers’ personal gain and results in clients emerging from the centre more alienated than when they went in. Comparison with the Soviet Gulag is not entirely unfair….
